When shooting aquatic creatures in captivity the following could cramp your style: particulate/debris, poor lighting and window glare. Combat them with the healing brush, high ISO plus shallow DOF, and by getting the lens right up to the glass.
Simultaneously beautiful and bizarre.
The variety of marine creatures is so vast, I could photograph them every day and not lose interest. From the cute and cuddly to the obscure and other-worldly, it’s a photographer’s paradise. All of the images in this gallery were captured in zoos, aquariums and exhibits. Perhaps some day I’ll spring for one of those expensive underwater DSLR housings so that I can snorkel and capture great first-person stills and footage. Until then, I rely on unique angles and lighting from aquatic creatures in captivity.
It’s exciting to photograph creatures who dwell under the surface. So many shapes, colors and patterns. I view in awe.
