From the French patron, is a type of visual theme with recurring events or objects, sometimes referred to as elements of a set of objects.
Celebrating visual rhythm.
Identifying and capturing images with strong patterns brings out the Graphic Designer in me. I look for a rhythmic cadence of shapes that are either unique, strong, plentiful or all of these. This type of photography doesn’t happen on accident for me. It takes a very deliberate approach to look at scenes, products and surroundings to identify and appreciate natural, photo-worthy patterns.
Pattern-based photography isn’t necessarily a glamorous style or approach, yet it has a universal appeal in that most anyone can identify and appreciate visual patterns. I consider it to be the most accessible form of abstract photography.
Admittedly, most of my pattern photos don’t really tell much of a story. The user needs to project their story onto the images. In my further exploration of pattern shooting, I’d like to shift focus a little and find strong rhythms that have their own story to tell. More to come…
