“Standard” rules for most live performances:

  • No flash photography.
  • Allowed to shoot first 3 songs only.
  • Be as inconspicuous as possible.
  • What Biff (the security guy) says is the law.

Fast-paced, dramatic and so fun!

Creative performance photography really inspires me. The artist and musician in me gobbles it all up. I love capturing those great moments of victory when a performer nails a line, perfectly syncopates a set of hits, settles in a thick groove or pours out great passion and energy in a song. I don’t mind the challenges so much with this form of photography – I love to be around the performance. Lighting can be tricky, getting in the right spot at the right moment is hard at times and maintaining critical focus on these moving subjects is less than easy. In the end, these images tell such a great story, so who cares the trouble it took to capture the moment, right?

During performances, I’m typically trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. I’d prefer to capture candid shots instead of posed moments. It’s funny to me how some performers actually seek out camera lenses in a crowd and really ham it up for the photogs.
