- Detail: Typically, the camera is close to the subject and the resulting image is a tight crop on a portion of the subject.
- Drama: Intentionally exaggerates the sense of the subject’s texture to communicate its message.
- Information: Special attention paid to framing, perspective and lighting to accurately depict the subject’s tactile properties.
Communicating smooth and rough, visually.
In the same way that I hope my landscapes transport the viewer to a different place or that my photos of delicious food help the viewer to virtually taste it, I hope that my abstract texture images clearly communicate the tactile nature of the subject. The shots in this gallery were specifically chosen for their strong sense of texture. Good lens optics and tack focus allow the subject’s texture to be effectively expressed.
I can totally understand why many viewers would consider this type of photography bland and not particularly engaging. They’re not even my favorite things to shoot, but I see the great value in how they train my eye to identify and appreciate all of the qualities of a particular subject – even texture. It’s this attention to detail and respect for the subject that enables my other photographic disciplines to thrive.
